Since this was a free day, a late, leisurely breakfast.

Then we all piled into the van (three of us on the mattress in the back) and Martel drove us all to Tarawera Lake. From there, we all (except Martel), hiked down to Tarawera Falls, a 3.5 km hike. The trail was very well-maintained, through the forest.

Martel drove the van down to the lower parking lot, close to the falls, then ran back up the trail to meet us.
Then we went back home and explored the town -- tiny: exploration by bike took all of 10 minutes.

Dinner was sausages with a pasta salad, with pavlova (a New Zealand specialty) topped with whipped cream and berries for dessert.
